How to Restore a cPanel Account Backup in WHM?

When a client's data needs to be recovered — due to accidental deletion, site migration, or corruption — you can restore their full cPanel account from a backup file using WHM.

Restore from a cpmove or Full Backup File

  1. First, upload the backup file to your server. Use one of these methods:
    • Upload via cPanel File Manager to a temporary location (e.g., /home/username/backup.tar.gz).
    • Upload via FTP directly to the server.
  2. Login to WHM.
  3. Go to Backup → Restore a Full Backup/cpmove File.
  4. Enter the full path to the uploaded backup file (e.g., /home/username/cpmove-username.tar.gz).
  5. Choose restore options:
    • Overwrite existing account – Replaces the current account with backup data.
    • Create new account – Restores as a brand new account.
  6. Click Restore.
  7. Monitor the restore progress log.

Once complete, the account is fully restored with all files, databases, email accounts, and DNS settings from the backup.

Restore Individual Files (Not Full Account)

To restore specific files only (not the full account):

  1. Download the backup file and extract it on your local computer.
  2. Find the specific files needed.
  3. Upload those files to the client's account via cPanel File Manager or FTP.

Warning: Restoring with "Overwrite existing account" replaces ALL current data with the backup version. Ensure the client understands this before proceeding.
