How to Use Leech Protection in cPanel
Leech Protection prevents users from sharing their login credentials for password-protected areas of your website. It monitors how many times a username is used within a given period and disables accounts that exceed the limit.
Steps to Enable Leech Protection
- Login to cPanel.
- Under Security, click Leech Protection.
- Browse to the password-protected directory you want to protect.
- Click on the directory name.
- Configure settings:
- Maximum Logins per Username per Two Hours: Set a limit (e.g., 5).
- Redirect to URL: Enter a URL to redirect leechers to (e.g., a warning page).
- Send Email Alert To: Enter your email to receive notifications when leech protection triggers.
- Disable Compromised Accounts: Check this to automatically disable accounts that exceed the limit.
- Click Enable.
Note: Leech protection only works on directories that are already password-protected via cPanel's Directory Privacy feature.
Use Cases
- Membership websites where credentials are being shared.
- Premium content areas with unauthorized sharing.
- Staff-only portals where login sharing needs to be monitored.
