How to List and Delete DNS Zones in WHM?

WHM keeps a DNS zone for every domain hosted on your reseller account. Over time, terminated accounts may leave behind unused DNS zones. This guide shows you how to list and clean up DNS zones.

List All DNS Zones

  1. Login to WHM.
  2. Go to DNS Functions → List DNS Zones.
  3. A table lists every domain with a DNS zone on the server.
  4. Columns show: Domain name, number of records, and options to Edit or Delete.

Delete a DNS Zone

  1. Go to WHM → DNS Functions → Delete a DNS Zone.
  2. Select the domain whose zone you want to delete from the dropdown.
  3. Click Delete.
  4. Confirm the deletion.

Warning: Deleting a DNS zone removes all DNS records for that domain. If the domain is still active and being used, its website and email will stop working. Only delete zones for domains that are no longer hosted or registered.

When to Delete a DNS Zone

  • A client account has been terminated and the domain is no longer hosted.
  • A domain has been transferred to another host.
  • A test or demo domain that is no longer needed.

Orphaned DNS Zones

Orphaned zones are DNS zones that exist in WHM but have no corresponding cPanel account. These can accumulate over time after account terminations. Clean them up periodically to keep your server tidy.
