How to Use the Track DNS Tool in WHM?
The Track DNS tool in WHM performs a live DNS lookup and traceroute for any domain. It is useful for verifying that a client's domain is pointing to the correct server and diagnosing DNS-related issues.
How to Access Track DNS
- Login to WHM.
- Go to DNS Functions → Track DNS.
- Enter the domain name you want to look up (e.g.,
clientdomain.com). - Click Look Up.
Understanding the Results
The tool returns two sections:
- Traceroute: Shows each network hop between the server and the domain. High latency on a hop may indicate network congestion.
- DNS Lookup: Shows the IP address the domain currently resolves to. If this matches your server IP, the domain is pointed correctly.
How to Interpret Results
| Scenario | What It Means | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Domain resolves to your server IP | DNS is correctly configured | No action needed |
| Domain resolves to old server IP | DNS not propagated yet | Wait up to 48 hours |
| Domain resolves to wrong IP entirely | Nameservers not updated | Ask client to update nameservers |
| No DNS record found | Domain not registered or DNS zone missing | Check registrar and add DNS zone in WHM |
External DNS Checking Tools
For checking DNS propagation from multiple global locations, use these free tools alongside WHM's Track DNS:
- whatsmydns.net – Check from 20+ global locations
- dnschecker.org – Country-by-country DNS check
- mxtoolbox.com – Check MX, SPF, DKIM, and A records
Note: DNS changes take 15 minutes to 48 hours to propagate globally depending on the domain's previous TTL (Time To Live) setting. Lower TTL = faster propagation.
