How to Manage Nameserver IP Addresses in WHM?

After setting up private nameservers (ns1 and ns2), you need to register their IP addresses in WHM so the server knows which IP to use when responding to DNS queries for those nameservers.

Add Nameserver IP Addresses

  1. Login to WHM.
  2. Go to Server Configuration → Nameserver IPs (search "Nameserver IPs" in the search bar).
  3. For each nameserver, enter:
    • Nameserver Hostname: e.g., ns1.yourdomain.com
    • IP Address: Your server's IP address
  4. Click Add Nameserver IP.
  5. Repeat for ns2.yourdomain.com.

The nameserver IPs are registered. WHM will use these IPs when clients' domains query your nameservers for DNS resolution.

View Current Nameserver IPs

The Nameserver IPs page shows all currently registered nameservers and their associated IPs. You can edit or delete entries from this page.

What Happens If Nameserver IPs Are Wrong?

  • DNS queries to your nameservers return incorrect or no results.
  • Client websites and emails stop working even though the files are on the server.
  • New domains pointed to your nameservers fail to resolve.

Tip: If you change your server IP (e.g., after a server migration), remember to update the nameserver IPs in WHM AND update the child nameserver registration at your domain registrar to point to the new IP.
