How to Create a CNAME Record in cPanel
A CNAME record (Canonical Name record) is a type of DNS record that maps one domain name (alias) to another. It is commonly used to point a subdomain to an external service such as Shopify, Google Workspace, Mailchimp, or any third-party platform.
Common Uses of CNAME Records
- Point
mail.yourdomain.comto Google Workspace - Point
shop.yourdomain.comto your Shopify store - Verify domain ownership for services like Mailchimp or SendGrid
- Set up a CDN like Cloudflare with a custom subdomain
Steps to Add a CNAME Record
- Login to cPanel.
- Under the Domains section, click Zone Editor.
- Find your domain and click Manage.
- Click + Add Record.
- Fill in the following:
- Name: Enter the subdomain (e.g.,
mailformail.yourdomain.com). - TTL: Leave as default (3600) or set a lower value for faster propagation.
- Type: Select CNAME from the dropdown.
- Record: Enter the target hostname provided by your third-party service (e.g.,
ghs.google.com).

Note: DNS changes typically take 15 minutes to 4 hours to propagate. In some cases, it can take up to 48 hours for changes to be visible worldwide.
Editing or Deleting a CNAME Record
To edit or remove an existing CNAME record:
- Go to cPanel → Zone Editor → Manage.
- Find the CNAME record in the list.
- Click Edit to modify it or Delete to remove it.
- Confirm the changes.
