How to Create a CNAME Record in cPanel

A CNAME record (Canonical Name record) is a type of DNS record that maps one domain name (alias) to another. It is commonly used to point a subdomain to an external service such as Shopify, Google Workspace, Mailchimp, or any third-party platform.

Common Uses of CNAME Records

  • Point mail.yourdomain.com to Google Workspace
  • Point shop.yourdomain.com to your Shopify store
  • Verify domain ownership for services like Mailchimp or SendGrid
  • Set up a CDN like Cloudflare with a custom subdomain

Steps to Add a CNAME Record

  1. Login to cPanel.
  2. Under the Domains section, click Zone Editor.
  3. Find your domain and click Manage.
  4. Click + Add Record.
  5. Fill in the following:
    • Name: Enter the subdomain (e.g., mail for mail.yourdomain.com).
    • TTL: Leave as default (3600) or set a lower value for faster propagation.
    • Type: Select CNAME from the dropdown.
    • Record: Enter the target hostname provided by your third-party service (e.g., ghs.google.com).
  6. Click Add Record.

Note: DNS changes typically take 15 minutes to 4 hours to propagate. In some cases, it can take up to 48 hours for changes to be visible worldwide.

Editing or Deleting a CNAME Record

To edit or remove an existing CNAME record:

  1. Go to cPanel → Zone Editor → Manage.
  2. Find the CNAME record in the list.
  3. Click Edit to modify it or Delete to remove it.
  4. Confirm the changes.
